‘Our Blue Planet’ study day – Saturday 14 September

our_planetWe will be holding a one-day cultural event on Saturday 14 September consisting of a series of short talks led by experts from within the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute (SMMI) at Southampton. This thought provoking and inspiring conference will provide you with the opportunity to learn and engage in discussion about oceanography from academics of international distinction.

Oceans cover 70 per cent of the Earth’s surface and in places, are over seven miles deep.

They provide over half of the oxygen that we breath and are home to more species and animals than are found on land. In spite of their importance, we still have better maps of the surface of the Moon and Venus than our own sea floor. This study day will enable you to find out about the latest scientific discoveries on the ocean. Topics will include an introduction to creatures of the deep ocean, and how the ice caps are melting and yet the oceans could provide one of the buffers to climate change for the future. Not only are the oceans a source of food, they are rapidly becoming our best hope for renewable energy in the twenty-first century.
