Lecture to show how copper surfaces enhance patient safety

Professor Michael Schmidt from the Medical University of South Carolina will be giving a lecture as part of the Institute for Life Sciences Seminar series on Thursday 5 September.

The lecture “Bacteria, Burden and Bundles: How copper surfaces continuously enhance patient safety” starts at 4pm at the University’s Highfield Campus (Building 6, Room 1077 – Lecture Theatre A).

In his lecture, Professor Schmidt will talk about his research into the control of healthcare-associated infections (HCAI). He will discuss the effectiveness of copper and its alloys to continuously limit the concentration of bacteria that cause HCAIs within healthcare environments. He will also look at the complexities of applying antimicrobial copper touch surfaces and how controlling the concentration of bacteria within the built environment can augment current efforts to enhance patient safety.

The talk is very topical since Professor Bill Keevil, Head of the Microbiology Group and Director of the Environmental Healthcare Unit, appeared on BBC Two’s Science Club last week to reveal how copper can be used to restrict the spread of global antibiotic resistant infections, such as MRSA. Refreshments will be served after the seminar in Building 6, Room 1081.

The talk is free but you need to reserve your place by contacting Janette Thompson on 023 8059 7280 or email: [email protected]
