Access to research facilities and equipment search via SUSSED

Staff and researchers can now search and browse research facilities and equipment database records via the SUSSED portal. This new search facility, located on the “Researcher” tab, allows staff to browse equipment capabilities across the country and identify potential support for bids or to further partnership developments.

A fundamental feature of the search is the ability to filter records either by “SES5 only”, Science & Engineering South (SES-5) consortium members’ equipment, or “Southampton only”. The SES-5, comprising the Universities of Southampton, Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College and University College London, was recently established to enable innovation and to explore new ideas through collaboration whilst providing efficiencies of scale and shared utilisation of facilities to increase the return on existing and future public investment.

The secure data contribution from the SES5 consortium has been the culmination of a project partnering members from across the Science & Engineering South (SES-5) institutions to establish a system enabling a standardised approach to the secure sharing of data, describing our research facilities and equipment.

Finally, we would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who assisted the interns with the asset verification exercise over the summer which aimed to improve the data describing our research facilities and equipment within the university. The updated records will be published on the University’s Research Equipment and Facilities Database over the coming weeks providing improved standardised records for location, descriptions and contact details. In turn, this data populates equipment.data, the national equipment portal for UK HE research facilities and the equipment data shared across SES5 consortia.
