A Globally Responsible University. A message from the Chief Operating Officer and Dean of Faculty of Social and Human Sciences.

Environment & Sustainability

What is your responsibility?

We all have an impact on the environment whilst working at the University. Reducing the adverse impacts relies on the cooperation and actions of us all. All members of staff should consider their impact on the environment and sustainability on a day to day basis. To support this, new employment contracts include this responsibility.

The University has set the following targets to drive continual environment and sustainability improvement:

  • Energy & carbon: 20 per cent reduction in carbon emissions from energy consumption by 2020 (against 2006 baseline)
  • Water: 30 per cent reduction in water use by 2020 (against 2009 baseline)
  • Waste: 60 per cent recycling by 2013
  • Transport: Commuting by staff single car occupancy reduced from 46 per cent to 38 per cent by 2015

By taking simple actions, such as those listed below, you can help us meet these targets:

  • Switch off non-essential electrical equipment when you leave work at the end of the day, at weekends and holidays
  • Report incidents such as oil spills, and faults such as dripping taps
  • Use the recycling facilities
  • Buy services and goods with consideration of their environmental and social impact
  • Think about how you travel and consider more sustainable modes of travel or whether you need to travel at all

If you want to know more about our commitment to the environment and sustainability, you will find our Policy at southampton.likn.co/sustainability.

Please help us to meet our targets.
