Lifelong Learning ‘Race and Resistance’ Study Day, Saturday 19 October

race_resistanceWe will be holding a one-day cultural event on Saturday 19 October consisting of a series of short talks led by experts from within Humanities at Southampton.

This thought provoking and inspiring conference will provide you with the opportunity to learn and engage in discussion about black history and related topics from academics of international distinction.

Coinciding with Black History Month, this study day will provide a chance to think about African lives over the past four centuries. Drawing upon the range of scholars working on African history at Southampton, the day will provide snapshots of life during and after the era of the European empires.

The day will consider life in Africa in the earliest years of empire, slave life and rebellion on the plantations of the West Indies in the nineteenth century, through the black experiences of France in the jazz age, and on to African communities in postwar Britain. The day will draw upon a rich range of African material culture, from sculptures and paintings to diaries and other personal accounts, to build up pictures of lives during some of the great periods of turmoil and change that have defined the modern world.
