A new Doctoral Training Partnership involving the University has been awarded funding by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) to deliver postgraduate supervision, training and skills development from 2014.
The South, West and Wales Consortium of universities, led by the University of Bristol, will receive £14.2M over five years. The funding will place a strong emphasis on collaboration with 19 partner organisations including English Heritage, the National Trust, the BBC, Cadw and Welsh National Opera. Other universities involved include Aberystwyth, Bath, Bath Spa, Cardiff, Exeter and Reading.
The funding, which equates to around 200 new studentships across the Consortium, will allow for innovative postgraduate support, including the development of broader skills such as partnership working and language skills, and experience in working outside academia through industry and international placements. At Southampton, the studentships will come in a broad range of subject areas including Archaeology, English, Film, History, Modern Languages, Music and Philosophy.
The Consortium’s successful bid for funding was praised for its “consistent and convincing strategy for the provision of a very high quality training environment for postgraduates”.
“This is a significant success for my academic colleagues which should open up some excellent opportunities for collaboration with our partner institutions and organisations whilst creating exciting experiences for our doctoral students,” said Professor Anne Curry, University Dean of Humanities.
