Exploring British imperial power – 25th Wellington Lecture

We are delighted to announce details of this year’s Wellington Lecture: Forging freedom – the Duke of Wellington and British anti-slavery, a lecture by Professor John Oldfield.  

The lecture will be held at the Turner Sims Concert Hall, University of Southampton, on Wednesday 30 October. Doors open from 5.30pm and the lecture will commence at 6pm.

Professor Oldfield is Wilberforce Professor of Slavery and Emancipation, and Director of the Wilberforce Institute for the study of Slavery and Emancipation at the University of Hull. Professor Oldfield was formerly Professor of Modern History at the University of Southampton and Director of the Southampton Centre for Eighteenth-Century Studies.

Established in 1989 with an endowment from the Spanish Ambassador, the annual Wellington Lecture explores aspects of the life and times of the first Duke of Wellington, one of the leading military and political figures of the 19th century.
