Rooms with a view- New University halls of residence

cirty gatewayThe 15 storey tower of the new City Gateway development, on the corner of Thomas Lewis Way & Stoneham Way, is rapidly becoming a local landmark and when it is handed over next August will be the University’s first new halls of residence for over 9 years.

City Gateway is a collaboration between the University, French development & construction company Bouygues, Stoneham Lane Surgery and a local authority pension fund.  It will provide the University with 364 rooms of new accommodation consisting mostly of traditional cluster flats for between 5 & 7 students but will also have a number of self-contained studio, 1 & 2 flats thereby providing a mix of accommodation suitable for a range of University students including both under and post graduates, under a mile from our Highfield campus.

The Gateway’s 364 bedrooms are all generously proportioned with an en-suite bathroom. Students in the cluster flats then share kitchen/dining facilities and those flats in the tower will have extensive views of the surrounding area.   The hall also houses a reception, management office, two student common rooms, a laundry and covered cycle store with 176 spaces.

In addition to the University accommodation City Gateway will also be home to a new medical centre, a convenience store, pharmacy and several other shops.

Under an agreement with Southampton City Council, the developers are also implementing an Employment & Skills Plan which includes targets for employing local labour and providing work experience opportunities.  The developers have recently offered 11 work experience places to local students with other site staff currently undertaking apprenticeships or studying for NVQ’s whilst working on the construction.     City Gateway is one of two new halls of residence currently under construction for the University, the other being the 1104 bedroom Mayflower Halls, located in Southampton City centre.
