Malaysia Campus to celebrate scholarship and industry

The University of Southampton Malaysia Campus will be buzzing today, Friday, 29 November, as three major events unfold at the EduCity@Iskandar in Johor.

The day starts with the presentation of the first three Lloyd’s Register Foundation scholarships, recognising the top three academic performers in Mechanical Engineering. Mark Darley, South Asia Area Manager of Lloyd’s Register, will be on campus to present the scholarships in front of students, staff and special guests including Tony Collingridge, OBE, Director of Trade & Investment for the UKTI in Malaysia.

Shortly after the presentations, John McBride, Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysia Campus, will convene the first meeting of a new Industrial Advisory Board. The Board will help to facilitate close links with industry and to discuss the development of internships and placement programmes that are built around organisational business needs. Organisations invited to take part in the Board include Malaysian-based organisations such as Tektronix, Infineon Technologies, Spirit Aero Systems Malaysia, the Institute of Engineers Malaysia and the United Kingdom Department for Trade & Investment.

Later in the afternoon, the Campus will welcome Professor Ajit Shenoi, Director of the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute at the University of Southampton, to deliver a public lecture entitled ‘101 Roles for Maritime Engineers – Challenges and Opportunities for Maritime Engineers in the 21st Century.’ During his lecture, Professor Shenoi will consider the twin global challenges facing human-kind today – climate change and providing for the well-being of an ever-growing world population.
