UPDATE: Introduction of the title of Associate Professor

Following our announcement on 27 September 2013 regarding the adoption of the title of Associate Professor by the University, I am writing to inform you of a deferred approach to its introduction.

Having considered, in more detail, the full implications of the implementation of such a significant change from 1 January 2014 and the need to ensure a fair and rigorous process, it is prudent to delay the implementation until 1 October 2014, for the start of the new academic year.

Specifically:

  • Level 6 academic staff who are on a mixed pathway of research and education will be invited to adopt the title of Associate Professor from 1 October 2014, if they so wish. Those staff who are not invited to adopt the title will be able to appeal. Further information on adopting the title for existing academic staff will be provided in June 2014.
  • Level 6 academic staff that are successful in this year’s promotion round on a mixed pathway of research and education will be able to use the title of Associate Professor from 1 October 2014; up to that point they will be conferred the title of Senior Lecturer. This will not affect their new salary which will be paid from 1 March 2014 as usual.
  • New appointments to a position on a Level 6 mixed pathway of research and education will use the title of Associate Professor from 1 October 2014. Up to that point they will be able use the title of Senior Lecturer.
  • The title of Reader will not be conferred on new appointees or internally promoted staff from 1 January 2014.

I hope this clarifies the situation.

Professor Adam Wheeler

Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor
