We will be holding a one-day cultural event on Saturday 25 January consisting of a series of short talks led by experts from within Modern Languages at Southampton. This thought provoking and inspiring conference will provide you with the opportunity to learn and engage in discussion about monsters from academics of international distinction.
What is a monster? They stalk through mythology, politics, art, medicine and many other areas of life. As a figure of fear, the monster is by definition unclassifiable and challenges our systems of thinking. It opens the door to all that is alien, unknown and excluded. This Study Day will examine monsters and the monstrous in art, politics and history and in the process will see how monsters challenge our conventional frames of reference and help us to think about the modern world.
