Southampton audiences have a rare opportunity to see a powerful new version of one of the 20th century’s most enduring stories.

This summer is the 70th anniversary of the betrayal of Otto Frank, his family and friends to the Nazi occupying forces, after hiding in a cramped attic for over two years. In February, local theatregoers can share their struggle in a powerful and moving Tony Award-nominated adaptation of Anne’s diaries.“Anne was inspiring in her refusal to give up hope: Nelson Mandela said he and his fellow prisoners read her diary to gain inspiration.“In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart” – Anne Frank

The Broadway cast included a young Natalie Portman, later to become a Hollywood superstar. This SUP production also features outstanding young talent in principal roles, including local college students April Napper as Anne, Kat Smith as her sister Margot, Simon Crispin as Peter Van Daan and Southampton University student Jonathan Sketchley as Mr. Dussel. “I’m delighted to have such a skilled and professional young cast – they are brilliant,” says the Director. “In fact, we’re fortunate to have such a fantastic ensemble cast all-round.”

This adaptation, by award-winning US playwright Wendy Kesselman, was acclaimed by critics: “A powerful new version that moves the audience to gasps, then tears.” – Associated Press and “Finely textured new Diary tells a deeper story… sensitive, stirring and thoroughly engaging.” – Newsday.
