Celebrating 100 years of ‘Southampton people’

Friday 20 June marks the 100th anniversary of the official opening, in 1914, of the first ‘new’ buildings at the University’s then recently acquired Highfield campus.

It is also 100 years since we first adopted the name of the city in our title – becoming the University College of Southampton http://southampton.likn.co/aboutus/historyofuni/new_century.html.

To mark this anniversary and to celebrate the contributions that individuals at the University have made to academia and to building the reputation of Southampton through their work, we are launching a project highlighting the achievements of ‘Southampton People’ (working title).

The project will celebrate a hundred years of ‘Southampton People’. The aim is to recognise the role that women and men (academics, alumni, staff and students) have played in the University’s success over the past century.

A series of window vinyls will be  installed on selected windows on campus, featuring some of the individuals from the past and the present, who have made an outstanding contribution to academia and Southampton. Look out for them from June.

If you have any suggestions of suitable candidates, please email Sarah Watts in Communications and Marketing [email protected]. A small working group will be selecting the first few names and the aim will be to expand the project to feature more individuals in the future.
