The University’s Sport and Wellbeing Service has joined with Active Nation to offer its members the chance to follow their sporting dreams inspired by London 2012 and Sochi 2014.
For 12 months from Saturday, 1 March, all members of the University facility will have access to the athletics track at Southampton’s Outdoor Sports Centre and use of the slopes at Southampton’s Alpine Snowsports Centre. Active Nation, the sport and exercise partner of Southampton City Council, manages the two centres.
“We’re pleased to be working closely with Active Nation to offer our members access to these specialist facilities which we hope will add further value to their membership experience,” said Matt Plant, the University’s Sport and Wellbeing Manager. “Sport is integral to health and well-being as well as an important part of life for students and staff at an active University like Southampton.
“Over the years, we have developed our services and facilities to provide a lively variety of fitness classes, courses, training sessions and other opportunities through our facilities at our Jubilee Sports Centre, the Watersports Centre, the Team Southampton Gym at our Wide Lane recreation grounds and now at Southampton Sports Centre ,” he continued. “Expanding the services and facilities available to our members raises the bar in terms of the quality of the experience we can offer through the Centres.”
“We’re delighted to offer members from the University of Southampton direct access to our Outdoor Sports and Alpine Snowsports Centres which we hope will enthuse and encourage even more people in the city to extend their interest and participation in sports through these excellent facilities,” said Ross McClean, Partnership Manager, Active Nation. “We share the same commitment as the University to foster healthier, more active lifestyles and this new arrangement will help support that mission in the months to come.”
The Jubilee Sports Centre on the University’s Highfield Campus is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. The state-of-the-art complex features including a 25-metre swimming pool, split level gym with 160 fitness stations and an eight-court sports hall.
During the last decade, the Centre has seen a huge growth in student and staff membership with increasing interest from community-based group and individual users of its facilities over the same period. At the start of the current academic year, the Centre experienced peak interest of 80,000 people entering its turnstiles during the month of October.
