Distinguished academic honour for Professor Phil Gale

Professor Phil GaleHead of Chemistry and Professor of Supramolecular Chemistry, Phil Gale, has been awarded a Doctor of Science degree by the University of Oxford.

The DSc is one of the higher doctorates and recognises his achievements in research during his career at Southampton.

As part of the process, Phil was asked to submit his best 20 research papers, which were assembled into a thesis and examined by senior academics. Phil said “Out of the papers I submitted, I am most proud of a paper from my group, published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society in 2011, in which we showed that there is a relationship between how well compounds can transport anions across lipid bilayer membranes and their anti-cancer activity.  This was the start of our on-going work on Medicinal Supramolecular Chemistry”.

Phil studied for both his MA and DPhil at Oxford and spent two years at the University of Texas at Austin as a Fulbright Scholar. He moved to Southampton as a Lecturer and Royal Society University Research Fellow in 1999. All the work submitted for his DSc degree was carried out at Southampton.

He will receive the award at a ceremony in Oxford in July and two weeks later will be reading the names of Southampton Chemists receiving their degrees at the Southampton degree ceremony.
