University gets through first round of S-lab awards

The S-Lab Conference and Awards are a unique initiative to create better linkages between, and highlight best practice amongst, all the key players involved in laboratory design, operation and management. The awards scheme, recognises excellence in laboratory design, operation and management in all sectors that creates improved performance whilst maintaining – and ideally enhancing – safety and sustainability.

This year, the University has entered the awards, specifically in the Laboratory Environmental Improvement category with its work on the UK’s first Wind Responsive Fume Extract system.

The Wind Responsive Fume Extract system is fully integrated into the University-wide ‘real time’ automatic metering system. This continuously monitors average sash positions in 17 separate laboratories, driving behaviour change, as well as recording energy consumption and fan speed in a way that has robustly demonstrated  250 tonnes CO2 and £47,000 savings in the first full year.

Now through to stage two, the team will have to submit a more detailed application as well as present the system to the S-Lab conference. If they get through that round, the winners of the awards will be announced at a Gala Dinner on the 1 September 2014.

We wish the team luck in the second round and will keep you posted on their progress as part of the awards.

This work is supported by the University’s Carbon Management Fund – a £4m investment in ideas that will reduce the institution’s carbon emissions and improve the sustainability of our campuses.
