Putting Sholing on the map

Philip Hoare, a Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University, was invited by the BBC Radio 3 to give a talk on his favourite spring walk for their long-running series ‘The Essay’. The programme, which was broadcast this week, describes a walk from Sholing which takes in Southampton Water and Netley’s ruined Abbey.

Philip’s work has often drawn on the particular qualities of Southampton’s landscapes, from his exploration of the ocean in ‘The Sea Inside’ (2013) to his recovering of hidden local history in ‘Spike Island: The Memoir of A Military Hospital’ (2001).
