Dear Colleagues,
Re: Introduction of the title of Associate Professor from 1 October 2014
Following the announcement of 4 December 2013, regarding the deferment of the adoption of the title Associate Professor by the University, I am writing to provide an update.
The title Associate Professor will be awarded to all eligible, newly appointed or promoted academics, from 1 October 2014. The plan for existing academic staff at Level 6, to adopt the title of Associate Professor from 1 October is as follows:
- Those who were promoted to Senior Lecturer as at 1 March 2014 will automatically adopt the title from 1 October 2014.
- Those who were appointed as Senior Lecturer from 1 January 2014 will automatically adopt the title from 1 October 2014.
- All other eligible members of academic staff will receive a letter before the end of May which will invite them to adopt the title of Associate Professor. The title of those staff not wishing to take up the title of Associate Professor will remain unchanged.
- Those who choose to adopt the title from 1 October will need to sign the letter confirming their wish to adopt the title and return it to Chris Hutchins, Manager HR Shared Services ([email protected]) by 31 August 2014. ‘Opt-in’ letters received after 31 August will be processed at the earliest opportunity. Once ‘opt-in’ letters have been received, a letter confirming the new title will be issued.
- Individuals who are not eligible to adopt the title of Associate Professor will receive a letter notifying them of this decision before the end of May. They will be able to appeal against this decision and details of the appeals process will be detailed in the letter.
- Level 6 ERE staff who are not considered eligible for the new title should receive career guidance from their manager/Head of Group if they would like to better understand how they become eligible for an Associate Professorship or promotion to Level 7.
The aim is for the majority of eligible staff to adopt the title of Associate Professor by 1 October 2014.
