‘The Year of Jubilee’ tells the incredible story of the Fisk Jubilee Singers. The first educational establishment for emancipated slaves in the USA was Fisk University, in Nashville, Tennessee. In order to raise funds to build the University, a choir was formed. After tentative beginnings, it went on to tour the United States, eventually achieving huge acclaim and success. They then came to Britain, performing to Queen Victoria and PM Gladstone. The choir also came to Southampton in 1874, performing at Hartley Hall, part of Hartley Institute, which later became the University of Southampton.
This concert, performed by musicians, the University Choir and star soloists marks the 14oth anniversary of this historic event. The music is based on the spirituals that the Fisk Singers performed – some lesser known, but many of them have become classics – Steal Away, Deep River, Go Down Moses, Swing Low Sweet Chariot – and many others.
