Professor Peter Kelemen of Columbia University and Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory will deliver a special lecture today, Thursday, 29 May during a visit to Ocean & Earth Science at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton.
Professor Kelemen, a University of Southampton Diamond Jubilee Fellow and Visiting Professor, will speak on “Mineral carbonation: emulating natural systems to achieve geologic carbon capture and storage” at 4.00pm in the Charnock Lecture Theatre (104/20). A reception will follow his lecture.
Professor Kelemen is an expert on the formation of new Earth’s crust at both mid-ocean ridges and in arcs. More recently he has turned his knowledge to the capture of CO2 by mineral carbonation reactions between the atmosphere, ground waters and rocks from the upper mantle – aspects of this major societal challenge will be the subject of his lecture.
In April, Professor Kelemen was elected to the US National Academy of Sciences. He is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and the Geochemical Society amongst numerous other awards.
Students and staff are invited and encouraged to come along to this compelling and thought-provoking talk and reception.
