The University is launching a special series of events throughout 2014 and into 2015 to mark the anniversary of the First World War.
The diverse programme includes: an international conference Sarajevo 1914: Spark and Impact, examining the causes and results of the Sarajevo assassinations; a special exhibition in the Hartley Library about warfare; concerts, including the premiere of a new composition, ‘Remembrance Day’, by Professor Michael Finnissy; a special lecture series entitled ‘Unknown War’; and a series of public study days and workshops. Contributors include the Turner Sims, John Hansard Gallery, Special Collections, and experts from a wide variety of disciplines, including historians, musicians, linguists and cinema scholars.
The package of special events has the theme of ‘Great War: Unknown War’ to highlight the University’s aim of revealing facets of the First World War that are less often examined and considered. Most are open to the general public, providing an opportunity for all of us to find out more about the conflict of 1914-1918 – a war which more than any other shaped our modern world.
