A five yearly statutory electrical maintenance is required on the transformers that supply power to the old University Data Centre, based on the Highfield Campus. This work is planned to take place over the week commencing 30 June.
Recent intense activity to migrate IT services over to the new University Data Centre, means that the vast majority of services will remain available to staff and students throughout the maintenance period. This is a very positive situation and is vastly different to the impact that you may have encountered in previous years.
Nevertheless, we have identified that there will be some disruption; however this will be for less than two per cent of the total of our IT services.
When is the electrical maintenance work happening?
This work will start at 07:00 on Monday 30 June and full service is expected to resume by 09:00 on Thursday 3 July.
What will be the impact for me?
The following services will be impacted for all staff and students:
- Subscribe
Staff and students will not be able to make changes to their ICT account, such as resetting their password during this period. In addition, new staff and students will not be able to register for an IT account
- Research Filestore
Some elements of Research Filestore will not be available. For information giving specific locations, please see http://go.soton.ac.uk/5xm.
You should ensure that any files or folders are copied to an alternative location, should you need access to them during this period. Please also remember to copy these files or folders back after the power outage to ensure that they are safely backed up.

- Email restoration services
For the duration of this maintenance work, you will not be able to restore emails, older than 30 days that you may have deleted
- Recovery of Filestore versions
For the duration of this maintenance work, you will not be able to recover a previous version that is older than 30 days
The following services will be unavailable for specific staff groups:
- HPC – Iridis 3, Lyceum 2 and Spitfire A
- All ICT services that are provided by Geodata
- MuVis
Brief interruption to links to University IT Services at the sites listed below:
A switch over of power supplies will be made between 07:00 and 09:00 on Monday 30 June and again on Thursday 3 July between 07:00 and 09:00, interrupting network access for these sites.
This will mean that you will not be able to access University IT services for a very brief period whilst the switch over of power supply is made. You are therefore advised not to undertake activities that are network dependent during these short breaks.
