Advance notice – One Book One Southampton – the Big Read 2014/2015

This October, we are launching an exciting new project – One Book One Southampton.

This is a University and community wide initiative to encourage students and staff to come together through reading the same book and sharing their thoughts, reactions and opinions.

Our annual ‘big read’ will be supported and enriched through multiple events and discussions that reflect and connect with the topic of the selected book. We hope that everyone will think of imaginative ways in which they might contribute around the theme of the book.

A group of staff and students from across the University has selected the first book. In 2014/15  this will be Jeremy Paxman’s Empire.

Paxman’s book gives an ‘acute and witty analysis’ of the influence of the British Empire. An influence which is everywhere, from the very existence of the United Kingdom to the ethnic composition of our cities.

We encourage all staff and students to engage in some way with the annual book, whether through societies, teaching programmes, hosting lectures, or organising events to discuss topics or themes from the book.
