Following on from the University’s highly successful conference on ‘Improving student satisfaction with assessment and feedback’ in February, Els Freshwater, Louise Clark and Phil Evans along with Dr Julie Wintrup, Principal Teaching Fellow, Centre for Innovation and Leadership in Health Sciences, are presenting a seminar on ‘Students as curriculum co-designers and change agents – if not, why not?’
This session will provide an opportunity to hear in more detail about students’ experiences of co-designing curricula and the opportunity to discuss new approaches to education design with students and colleagues.
Date: Thursday 17 July
Venue: 53/4025A (Mountbatten)
Time: 12.30-13.30 A light lunch will be provided from 12:30. The 30-minute presentation will start at 13:00 followed by discussion until 14:00.
Abstract
Students as curriculum co-designers and change agents – if not, why not?
This session will be led by a group of working, part-time doctoral students with extensive expertise in leading change, promoting innovation and quality, and managing doctoral research within demanding work roles and interdisciplinary communities of practice. Their critical reflections on health education suggest we ought to be more routinely working together to design curricula, given their deep knowledge of practice in all its complexity and their contemporary experience as students. Together we seek to dissolve the boundaries between practice, education and research, in the interests of deep and applied learning that offers possibilities for greater collaboration and a more radical rethink of processes of assessment, evaluation and practice development.
In this workshop you will hear about examples of student-designed modules, have an opportunity to explore ways to work with students, and hear from students how we might progress a new approach to education design.
