The Image of Finance: Why Jane Austen on the £10 Note Matters

On the 19-20 September there are two days of special events at Chawton House Libraryto accompany the AHRC-funded national touring exhibition ‘Show Me the Money: The Image of Finance’  and mark the decision of the Bank of England to depict Jane Austen on the £10 note.

The exhibition tells visual history of finance from 1700 to the present day, with an emphasis  role that women artists have played in telling the story of finance. Caroline Criado-Perez, who led the ‘Keep Women on English Banknotes’ campaign in 2013, will give a public talk  on Friday evening. The events are organised by Professors Emma Clery and Nicky Marsh from the Department of English, both specialists on literature and economics.

Friday 19 September, 10 am – 5 pm: Day Workshop: ‘Money, Sovereignty, and Representation’

Friday 19 September, 5:30 pm – 8 pm: Free Exhibition Private View with a Public Lecture

Saturday 20 September 9:30 am to 5 pm: University of Southampton Lifelong Learning Study Day: ‘Banking in the age of Jane Austen’
