Venue: 53/4025A (Mountbatten)

Time:    12:30 – 14:00. A light lunch will be provided from 12:30. The 30-minute presentation will start at 13:00 followed by discussion until 14:00.

Abstract:

Technology – enhancing a first year Biology field course

Alumni often cite undergraduate field courses as the most enjoyable aspect of their degree course.  Within the Centre for Biological Sciences, I co-ordinate our first year field course to Spain (BIOL1001), a destination the department has visited for the last 40 years.  The field course allows students to undertake hands-on fieldwork and has traditionally been very lo-tech.  However, the rapid increase in prevalence of smartphones and tablet devices has provided an opportunity to use technology to enhance fieldwork learning of undergraduates.  I have begun to incorporate technology into the  field course. In particular, I asked students to use the app Splice, to make short films in place of posters.
