The QlikView story

“QlikView has revolutionised my approach to targeting schools and colleges. Instead of trying to scrabble around with various bits of data in Excel, trying to create formula that will sort and filter the data, QlikView does it all for me!”

“The QlikView tool has enabled me to get hold of data quickly and efficiently and be able to share it when it is required.”

The University has made an investment in QlikView, a business intelligence tool, with the aim of making data from internal systems and external sources available in a dynamic form that allows anyone to ask questions of it. A number of applications have been developed by various teams covering data from graduate destinations through to research grant awards and these can be accessed from the Qlikview AccessPoint.

Before QlikView, the chances are that if you’d asked for some analysis of data, you’d have received a static Excel spreadsheet from one of a number of departments across the University. You may then have decided that it wasn’t quite what you were after and put in a further request for an updated report. Although Excel is great for many things, Qlikview allows you to present information in an attractive layout that may be easily filtered by a click of the mouse – hence ‘Qlik’ view.

Applications already developed include, the DLHE application which displays the results of the annual survey which captures the destinations of graduates six months after the completion of their programme of study; the NSS application providing benchmarking results of the National Student Survey data which can be interrogated by question, subject and institution; and the December Snapshots displaying student data by Year, Faculty, Academic Unit, Programme and Demographic Group.

There is a training application which will take you through the basics of QlikView and which will hopefully give you some confidence to try some of the other available applications. You can also find QlikView training videos on the web, such as those provided by QlikTech themselves.

If you can see another potentially useful application of Qlikview, please get in touch with Serviceline.
