The Epidemiology for Clinicians course provides training for up to 30 clinicians and those in related health disciplines in the early stages of their careers. The course covers the basics of epidemiology and provides a grounding in research methods that are also applicable in other research areas. The course has been run successfully each year since 2006 and has always been highly rated by the participants. The topics covered in the course include: measures of disease occurrence and risk, cohort, case-control and cross-sectional studies, randomised controlled trials, getting started in research, introduction to statistical analysis, statistical genetics, interpreting findings, and critical appraisal.
The 2015 course will run from lunchtime on January 7 to lunchtime on January 9 at Chilworth Manor. The previous courses have attracted participants from a wide variety of disciplines including rheumatology, geriatrics, occupational medicine, psychology, haematology, dermatology and microbiology, as well as those involved in medical research but who are not clinicians. The Faculty for the course comprises senior members of staff from the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit in Southampton and the MRC Epidemiology Unit in Cambridge. In addition to the main training sessions, two special lectures are given in the evenings to provide examples of epidemiology in practice and to illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of the discipline in identifying causes of disease.
