The University has climbed 14 places in this year’s Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings to rank 132 overall.
The rise is our fifth this year across the six leading university league tables, including three top 20 finishes in UK-focused rankings. In the THE, our overall score and ranking position has improved year on year, with scores improving in all measures and our ranking position improving in four areas, including International Outlook, Research and Citations, in addition to the overall ranking.
In the THE’s World Subject Rankings, we’ve entered the top 100 in Clinical, Preclinical & Health. We’ve also risen to 74th for Physical Sciences and rank 77th for Engineering & Technology.
Just last week, we completed a hat-trick of top 20 finishes in UK league tables by coming 18th in the Times/Sunday Times University Guide, after placing 16th in the Complete University Guide and 19th overall in the Guardian University Guide.
In September, we entered the top 150 of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) compiled by Shanghai Jiao Tong University for the first time ever – our highest ranking in that specific table. The ARWU focuses relies heavily on research outputs including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals. Taking that aspect out of the equation, Southampton rises to 96 in the ARWU.
In the international table published by QS, also in September, we maintained our status in the top 100 coming 94th overall.
