UCU Assessment Boycott – Information for staff

The Universities and Colleges Union (UCU) has asked its members to take action short of a strike from Thursday 6 November 2014, in support of a national disagreement relating to the proposed changes to the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS). The University has now been formally notified by the Union, that this action will take the form of a boycott of all setting, marking and assessment activity.

The University is disappointed that the Union is considering this action because of the obvious impact it is designed to have on students’ education and progression. We are committed to do all we can to ensure that our students are not disadvantaged by such action and continue to receive a world class education at Southampton.

The University has established processes to manage this type of disruption and will be working hard with representatives at the Students’ Union (SUSU) and other colleagues to implement contingency plans.

If UCU members do participate in industrial action the University of Southampton has a history of fair and proportionate responses. However, as this is a national dispute we will be working closely with UCEA to ensure a consistent approach.

More detailed information for UCU members to declare their participation will be made available through line managers. Further updates for all colleagues will be posted on Sussed.
