SCAG – Not just a ‘rubbish’ acronym; but a partnership made in heaven

SCAGThe South Coast Affinity Group waste and recycling partnership between six Universities has been highly commended in the Green Gown awards.  The innovative contract has been instrumental in driving up recycling rates and cutting costs across the institutions.

At Southampton, it has helped us achieve a 70 per cent recycling rate and saved about a quarter of a million pounds, through diverting waste away from landfill over the five years’ of the contract.  The judges commended the great collaboration between the Universities and the robust and sustainable model that could and should be adopted more widely.

Dr Neil Smith, Environment Manager said, “We are really proud of the strides we have made as part of this partnership in tackling waste management.  We are now starting to develop the ideas for the next recycling contract to continue to build on what we have achieved.”
