Performing at Turner Sims on Friday 5 December, British Indian vocalist Susheela Raman.
Blessed with a mesmerising voice and an captivating stage presence, Susheela has enraptured countless listeners with originals and her interpretations of songs from her Indian roots.
“As a singer I have a background in South Indian classical music, but I’ve also got into a lot of folk and spiritual music like the Sufi Qawwali. On the other hand, I draw on all sorts of other influences like Joy Division and the the Velvet Underground and Soul singers like Aretha. There’s powerful energy in the music so expect to be lifted!”
Susheela will be performing alongside a band comprised of virtuoso musicians including percussionist Pirashannah Thevarajah (who was Ravi Shankar’s percussionist of choice for many years and now plays with Anoushka Shankar) on South Indian Mridangam drum. Aref Durvesh will play tabla, Aref has played with the likes of Sting, Jeff Beck and Nitin Sawhney. Completing the line up are Kartik Raghunathan on violin and vocals and guitarist/producer Sam Mills.
