In his Autumn Statement, the Chancellor of the Exchequer has confirmed the introduction of loans from 2016-17 for postgraduate Master’s students under the age of 30. The proposals expect to bring an extra 10,000 students into postgraduate study.
In response to the announcement, Vice-Chancellor Professor Don Nutbeam welcomed the move. In a thought leadership piece for The Daily Telegraph online, Professor Nutbeam said, “Although details of the operation of the loan scheme are currently sparse, it represents a step in the right direction. In due course, I hope the scheme can be extended for those above the age of 30, taking advantage of higher education midcareer to upskill and change career direction. But this is a good start.”
