A team of archaeologists and students have been at the centre of worldwide media interest in a project which revealed the buried remains of a medieval city at Old Sarum in Wiltshire.
Kristian Strutt, Dominic Barker and Tim Sly worked with undergraduate and postgraduate students to carry out a geophysical survey of the outer bailey of what was once a fortification at the ancient monument, with origins in the Iron Age and Roman Conquest. Using a variety of different technologies, they were able to peer below the ground and reveal, for the first time, the layout of the medieval settlement.
BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, BBC World Service television and BBC1’s lunchtime news all carried the story, along with a number of national newspapers, including The Telegraph and the Independent. It was also the ‘Most Read’ story on BBC Online. Abroad, The New York Times, Times of India and El Pais in Spain ran articles, along with numerous other media outlets across the globe in Germany, Romania, China and Russia. In addition, over 150 UK local newspapers covered the story. Local radio stations and BBC South Today all carried reports.
