MEng Ship Science student Will Ashley and BSc Oceanography and Physical Geography graduate James Wilkie have each been awarded a top prize by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST).
Will received the Young Engineer of the Year award for his research into how ships bend and twist in waves, whilst James picked up the Best Marine Scientist 2014 award for his El Nino research.
Will’s project, Experimental Modelling of Ship Bending and Twisting in Waves – Utilising 3D Printing, involved towing tank testing with a model barge that had been produced by 3D printing at the university. You can read more about his research and award here.
James used atmospheric data to calculate how the top level of the ocean responds to the El-Nino Southern Oscillation, then compared the results with another set of findings that used real-life data from floats on the ocean. You can read more about his research and award here.
