Blackout 2014 – Thank you for switching off

The headline results show that there are reasons to be positive after more than 250 student and staff volunteers took part in this year’s Southampton Blackout on 14 November. This year the event expanded to include the Boldrewood campus for the first time, in addition to Highfield, Avenue and Winchester School of Art.

Dr Neil Smith, Environment Manager, says: “We’ve said it before, but the Blackout isn’t about one night – it’s about reminding staff and students about the collective impact their actions can have throughout the year. So now we need everyone to get in the habit of switching off everyday.”

An infographic will be published early in the New Year alongside the data from the University’s automatic metering system, which will give a guide as to how much electricity and money was saved over the Blackout weekend.

Staff should note:

 – Investments in new software mean that it’s rarely the case that you need to leave your computer on to work from home. Contact ServiceLine or visit the iSolutions website for information about using the VPN.

 – If you leave your computer on because it takes more than four minutes to load up in the morning, please contact ServiceLine, who can help identify any problems with the machine.
