Southampton commercial research to feature at London Science Museum

Cutting-edge commercial research from the University is to feature in a major new exhibition at the Science Museum in London.

The University’s Wolfson Unit for Marine Technology and Industrial Aerodynamics, which has been a world leader since 1967 in the prediction of sailing yacht performance through the use of experimental and computational techniques, has been chosen as one of three exhibitors to showcase their expertise in a three-year exhibition called ‘Engineer Your Future’.

The Wolfson Unit will showcase a sailing yacht model used in wind tunnel testing during Emirates Team New Zealand’s Version 5 Americas Cup challenge in 2007. The model was tested in the 7x5m wind tunnel at the University to develop and predict the sailing performance of the yacht.

Professor Simon Cox, Associate Dean for Enterprise in Engineering and the Environment, said: “It is excellent to see how the work of our Wolfson Unit Engineers is inspiring the next generation of engineers and scientists in this innovative exhibition at the Science Museum.”

The exhibition was opened by HRH Prince of Wales on the 16 December 2014.

Details of the exhibition can be found on the Science Museum website.
