€1m grant to study migration and reshaping of consumption patterns

Jackie Wahba, Professor of Economics, from Social and Human Sciences, and partners from France, Germany and China have been awarded almost €1m (over 3 years) to study migration and the reshaping of consumption patterns.

This partnership builds upon existing research collaborations between European and Chinese scholars in the field of economics and demography.

The proposed project will explore the impact of migration on consumption patterns, focusing on both internal migration in China and the Chinese diaspora in the European Union.

Speaking of the project, Jackie said,

“It aims to highlight the role of various drivers, in addition to migration and demographics concerning consumption patterns and behaviour, potentially leading to inequality. The rising inequality in China is of a concern for the country’s policy makers. At the same time, the changing patterns of Chinese consumption also hold importance for Europe and the rest of the world, with implications for world prices through increased demand for goods.”

Jackie is working with partners from Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA, Germany), Le centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CRNS, France) and Beijing Normal University (China).
