Talk by Professor Nicola Woodroofe on women in leadership roles: February 27

Professor Nicola Woodroofe will consider the challenges that face women academics, as well as the value of women in leadership roles in STEM areas (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

Professor Woodroofe will draw on her own experiences during her career as well as what she has learnt through her role in mentoring other women academics.

The talk  will take place on Campus, in Building 46, Room 2005

Professor Nicola Woodroofe is from Sheffield Hallam University (SHU).  She studied Biochemistry for her first degree at the University of London and then stayed there to complete a PhD on the enzyme Alkaline Phosphatase, funded by MRC.

A 2 year postdoctoral fellowship in Madison Wisconsin, USA followed and then she returned to the UK to continue research on muscle disease, in particular muscular dystrophy at the Institute of Neurology.

She then moved into multiple sclerosis research for almost 20 years, still at the Institute of Neurology, before moving to SHU to take up a lectureship. She has been there for the last 20 years and has managed to continue to gain funding for her research. She is now a professor and leads the Biomedical Research Centre at SHU.
