The Southampton University Korfball Team (Southampton Spartans) are the National Korfball Champions following impressive wins last weekend at the University of East Anglia.

The Southampton team, made up of 11 undergraduates and one postgraduate student, entered the two-day tournament along with the 15 other best teams from across the UK. This was the best result to date for the team, having placed 5th two years ago and 3rd last year.

After winning all of their matches on the Saturday, the Southampton Spartans were pitted against the home team of the University of East Anglia. In a closely fought battled final, the team managed to stay on top and won 8-9 in the final couple of minutes to win the championship.

Team Captain Nikesh Patel had this to say:

“I couldn’t be prouder of the team; every single player has worked so hard throughout the year and to win the BUCS National Championship in our third year as a student club is truly incredible! Our success this weekend wouldn’t have been possible without our amazing coaches so thanks so much for your time and effort!”

You can find more details about the Korfball club on the SUSU website.
