The University of Southampton has no opinion or stand point on the content of this conference. It is legally obliged under the Education (No 2) Act 1986, to ensure that freedom of speech within the law is secured for members, students and employees of the University, as well as for visiting speakers.
As part of the University’s legal obligation to host any conference, it must review the circumstances under which the event is being held and take into consideration the health and safety of staff, students, visitors and the public.
The University has been undertaking its own risk assessments and liaising with the police to take into consideration their assessment of the risks. It has become clear that over the last few weeks the foreseeable risk to peoples’ health and safety at or near the conference venue has been increasing. This risk has now surpassed the University’s ability to put suitable measures in place.
It has therefore been decided that, under the circumstances, the University must withdraw its permission for the conference to be held on its property. This decision has not been influenced by the content of the conference or any representations made to the University, it is purely based on the potential risk of harm to attendees, staff, students and the public if it were to proceed.
Speakers and delegates are being informed by the conference organisers and we have published a public statement at southampton.likn.co/news/statements.page
We are aware that there is likely to be increased commentary from individuals and the media due to this decision and we would ask colleagues to direct all enquiries from:
the media to the University Press & Media office on 023 8059 8933, or [email protected]
other individuals or organisations to the Vice-Chancellor’s Office on 023 8059 8166, or [email protected]
The University will continue to liaise with the police and provide proportionate security measures across campus. Should you notice any spontaneous demonstrations please notify our Security team on 023 8059 2811 (Internal Ext. 22811).
