Find out how the oceans are the key to the long-term health of our beautiful blue planet at Ocean and Earth Day on Saturday 25 April.
The event is part of the University’s award-winning Science and Engineering Festival and is run in joint collaboration with the National Oceanography Centre.
Ocean and Earth Day is a free, public open day and is being held at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS), based at Dock Gate 4 from 10:30 to 16:00 (last admission 15:30).
Visitors can see examples of the technology needed to explore the deepest oceans – have a go at driving a mini Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and see how 3D printing and laser cutting is used to create and develop parts for these specialist vehicles.
Professor Rachel Mills, Head of Ocean and Earth Science, said:
“Come and join us on Saturday to experience the deep, dark, unexplored parts of our planet. We open our doors at NOC for the day to everyone, of all ages from Southampton and the region. It’s a fantastic chance to see the exciting, world-leading science that goes on here in Southampton.”
NOC Executive Director, Professor Ed Hill, said
“Ocean and Earth Day gives us an opportunity to invite people from the local area into the centre and show off the marine science and technology developments that make the NOC one of the world’s leading oceanography centres. We’re very proud of our achievements and of the collaborative work that we do here with the University of Southampton, and can’t wait to welcome everyone on Saturday.”
A free park and ride service will be operating from Highfield campus and those who come on foot, by cycle or public transport will be entered into a prize draw.
