Dame Jessica, who is Dean of Health Sciences, is a world-leading expert on cancer and palliative care. In June 2014, she was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to healthcare research and education.

Fellows of the Academy of Medical Science are elected for their excellence in medical research, for innovative application of scientific knowledge or for their conspicuous service to healthcare.

Throughout her own career, Dame Jessica has successfully divided her time between universities and cancer research charities, changing the culture of cancer research by putting patient support at centre stage and paving the way for nurses to become a more central and pivotal force in the care given to people with cancer.

Speaking of her fellowship, Dame Jessica said,

“I’m delighted to be made a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and proud to be among some of the world’s leading researchers, all of whom have advanced medical science in such a significant way. For me, the honour is tribute to the many colleagues I have been privileged to work with who have put patients and their ongoing support at the heart of cancer research and care.”

Professor Sir John Tooke, President of the Academy of Medical Sciences said,

“The Academy of Medical Sciences champions the excellence and diversity of medical science in the UK, and this is clearly demonstrated in this year’s cohort of new Fellows. Their broad range of expertise and fantastic achievements to date shows just how strong the Fellowship is and their election is a much deserved honour.”
