Through the One Book, One Southampton project, we are delighted to announce the two winners of the Empire Competition.
Students from across the University were invited to write a response to Jeremy Paxman’s Empire, in an essay, review or short story.
The winner of the competition was Jack Clarke who wrote his well-informed and wide-ranging essay, drawing out the strengths and weakness of Jeremy Paxman’s approach to history. You can read his essay: ‘Jeremy Paxman: Empire, What ruling the world did to the British’ here. As winner of the competition, Jack receives the £350 cash prize.
The runner-up of the competition was Joseph Owen for his tough, funny, and critically astute imagining of the inception of Jeremy Paxman’s work. You can read his piece here. As runner-up of the competition, Joseph receives £100 in John Smith’s Book Tokens.
You can find out more information about the competition and the book Empire on the One Book, One Southampton website.
