Students get fundraising for Centre for Cancer Immunology

The University is leading the UK in cancer immunology research, launching a £25m fundraising campaign to establish the UK’s first dedicated Centre for Cancer Immunology at Southampton (planned for completion in 2017).

The state-of-the-art Centre will bring together world-leading scientists and doctors from a wide range of disciplines in a new global hub.  Through pooling knowledge, extending resources and increasing the number of clinical trials, the new Centre will accelerate our research progress and save more lives from cancer.

MAD day

Students across the University have been getting whole-heartedly involved in the fundraising campaign, with many of you participating in the Southampton Half Marathon on 26 April and one former student, Stuart Stares, taking part in the grueling Shropshire Ultimate Triathlon in August.

Humanities student Parul Pujara, is set to climb Mount Kilimanjaro this summer in an effort to raise £1,000 for the campaign. Parul said,

“I always wanted to donate to a cancer charity because I recently lost my grandfather to cancer, so it was just a matter of choosing which charity to support. Last term, I got my job as a Student Caller so I had heard about the CIC and I really believed it would make a difference. Immunotherapy is a new and different type of treatment and I do believe it will make a really big impact in the fight against cancer. I hope my Kilimanjaro challenge will at least raise awareness about the CIC so that more people opt to support it in future.”

Becoming a community fundraiser in aid of the campaign is a great way to get involved and to encourage others to show their support. You can learn about the fundraisers on their JustGiving page and find more information on the Centre for Cancer Immunology on the website
