Southampton has a lot to offer over the summer and to help you make the most of the oncoming calmer months, we’ve gathered some opportunities for you to discover.
On campus
Although there are some changes to campus over the summer, there’s still plenty going on. The SUSU market will continue every Thursday throughout the Summer, bringing you fruit, vegetables, and other local produce.
The Nuffield Theatre is bringing His Dark Materials: Part 1 & II, and Henry IV to theatre-goers this summer. The five star play A Number will also be returning to the campus’ stage. If archaeology is your passion, Avenue Campus is hosting a free Archaeology Activity Day on Sunday 11 July.
The Lord Browne of Madingley, Chairman of the Trustees of the Queen Elizabeth II Prize for Engineering, will visit the University on Wednesday 15 July for his lecture is entitled ‘Why business must fix its relationship with society and how it can do it.’ The lecture is part of our Distinguished Lecture Series.
Where to go
A wander down to the docks to ‘Walk the Walls’ makes for a very nice trip in the sunshine. If it’s sand and sea you’re after though, there are a handful of beaches within a 30 mile radius- just a hop on the Beach Bus away. The Beach Bus runs daily between Saturday 26 July and Monday 31 August, taking beach-seekers away from the city to Lymington, Lepe Beach and Hythe.
The Common is always pretty when the sun is shining, and a great spot for a barbecue, or take a stroll through Riverside Park in Bitterne. The Culture Trip has listed a few hidden gems well worth discovering.
Events
Southampton is a busy place throughout July and August, despite many students moving home. Events on offer include the Thai Food and Crafts Festival in Hoglands Park and Let’s Rock Southampton! taking over the Common on Sunday 11 July.
Free Outdoor Cinema events over Saturday 24 and Sunday 26 July, again in Hoglands Park, will show favourites such as Dirty Dancing, Mean Girls and The Beach. The August Fair will be bringing rides and candyfloss to the Common between Thursday 27 and Monday 31 August.
With all of this going on, and much of it free, you won’t be short of things to do.
