Success for Switch Off event

Over the 2014/15 academic year, over 750 students across our halls of residence once again took part in the annual Switch Off event.

In the last year, students competing in the event saved 126,000 kWh of electricity, which amounts to a total saving of £12,463. NUS published the figures, and they show a 4.7% reduction in electricity usage when compared to the 2007-2009 baseline figures.

Alongside the halls of residence Switch Off event, 44 student houses signed up to compete against each other throughout the year, by submitting regular meter readings to show their progress.

Lucy Potaschnick, the University’s Environment and Sustainability Manager, said:

“In a University our size, collective actions like this add up to big savings. Even in their shared accommodation students will find that simple actions have an impact on reducing the cost of their bills.”

The competition will run again in 2015/16. For more information visit the University’s Student Switch Off Facebook page or email [email protected] for the full results of this year’s event.
