After spending a period of time on secondment to the charity Macmillan Cancer Support she returned in 2008 to form the new School of Health Sciences.

Over the last seven years Jessica has led the development of our internationally-recognised interdisciplinary Faculty of Health Sciences, culminating in achieving first ranked status in REF 2014 for the Faculty’s research.

She was awarded a DBE in the 2014 Queen’s Birthday Honours list and elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences earlier this year.

Dame Jessica commented,

“Southampton has been a significant part of my life for the last thirteen years. I have worked with many great colleagues, made many friends and together we have achieved so much, particularly in my Faculty and the area of health care.

I have also had unique opportunities to influence and shape the direction of national policy which I will continue to do as Chair of the Council of Deans of Health. I remain totally committed to pursuing the priorities of the Faculty over the coming months.”

Vice-Chancellor, Don Nutbeam said,

“Jessica has made a significant contribution to our University as a researcher, a teacher and an academic leader.

As a member of the Executive Group, I have been grateful for her willingness to take on university-wide responsibilities such as the University’s Telling our Story Campaign, as Chair of the University 84 Club and most recently as University Equality and Diversity Champion.

I am delighted to see Jessica further advance her career through a University-wide role at Nottingham, and wish her continuing success in this new role.”
