A new work by Professor of Composition Michael Finnissy, commissioned by the BBC, will premiere at the Proms this weekend.
The BBC Scottish Symphony and conductor Ilan Volkov will perform Finnissy’s ‘Janne’ on Sunday, 16 August at 19:30 at the Royal Albert Hall.
The concert will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 during the second half of the evening’s programme from 21.00.
Earlier in the day of the premiere Finnissy will join BBC 3 presenter, Andrew McGregor for a Proms Extra event at the Royal Academy of Music, to discuss the world premiere of ‘Janne’ and introduce performances of Professor Finnissy’s chamber works.
An edited version of the conversation will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 as part of a series of Proms Composer Portraits at 22.15 on Sunday.
The premiere is part of a programme alongside three works by the great Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957), the Symphony No. 3 in C major, the Violin Concerto and the Fourth Sympony, Opus 63.
‘Janne’ was the family’s name for Sibelius as a child, a diminutive of ‘Johan’ – in English roughly equivalent to ‘Jimmy’.
