The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) compiled by Shanghai Jiao Tong University was published recently and, once again, the University has performed well.
For the second consecutive year, Southampton is ranked in the top 150 of universities overall.
The University is included in a group of institutions ranked ‘100-150’ so has not received a specific numerical ranking. From the inception of this table in 2003 until 2013 the University was ranked in the ‘151-200’ before rising last year.
There is also good news for Southampton in the ARWU’s subject-related tables. The University is ranked amongst the top 51-75 universities for Chemistry which rates fourth amongst UK institutions listed. Southampton is also ranked amongst the top -51-75 institutions for Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences, rating amongst the top 5 UK universities in this area.
In total, more than 1200 institutions have been ranked in each subject field of the AWRU but only the top 200 appear in each list. To be considered for inclusion in the AWRU, an institution must have Nobel Laureates, Fields Medal recipients and Highly-Cited Researchers. In addition, major universities of every country with significant amount of papers indexed by Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCIE) and Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) are also included.
The two leading world university rankings are due for publication in September. The QS World Rankings are scheduled for publication on 15 September followed by the Times Higher Education world rankings on 30 September.
